Of course, school is very important in order to learn the language. You are taught by people with experience and certifications who share their knowledge to you. However, it’s not the only way you have. You can do much more to improve your skills, even by yourself, and if you like the language you will find it enjoyable.
So, here are a few suggestions that (trust me) will definitely help you. You will also learn words and expressions that school doesn't teach you ;).
1. Watching films and TV series in English
I’m 100% sure you have already heard this at least once in your life, but there’s a reason. In fact, it’s probably one of the most useful things you can do to better your English skills. This is an amazing exercise to help your listening and to learn new words and expressions.

I suggest starting with the English subtitles, so that you can connect the words to their pronunciation and follow the conversation even if you miss some words. When you feel ready, you can remove the subtitles and understand the story by just listening. If you prefer you can use Italian subtitles instead of the English ones, in order to understand the meaning of the words.
2. Listening to music and reading the lyrics
This is another really good exercise, expecially to expand your vocabulary. In fact, I find it easier to remember some words when they are related to a song I like.

3. Watching videos
Personally, I can say this has helped me a lot in the past few years. Almost every day I watch videos in English on youtube about different topics I’m interested in, for instance fitness, cooking, fashion, vlogs etc. This really helps your listening, your vocabulary, even your fluency and if you are watching something you like you will find it much more pleasant than a normal lesson.
There are also a lot of channels on different platforms like youtube or tiktok which make videos to teach you English. If you are not very patient and you prefer short videos, tiktok could be a good idea, while on youtube there are longer but obviously more complete and clear videos.
Here are a few youtube channels and tiktok profiles I really like and I think they have very interesting contents:
